History

On July 28th, 1958, the proposal of operating the Beijing - Ulaanbaatar - Moscow train was made. The three countries: China, Mongolia and Moscow achieved the agreement that the train should run one round trip once a week since the summer of 1959.

On June 4th, 1959, the train K3/ K4 started to run across three capital cities of three countries: Beijing, Ulaanbaatar and Moscow. At that time, passengers in the train were government officials, delegations and officials above provisional level with security people keeping the safety of them. Thus, the train K3 and K4 were also called “the mystical oriental train” on the ground that the passengers all work for the government.

When it came to the year of 1990, business men began to take the train too. They mainly carried lots of merchandise for sale in the cities along the way. During the 10-20 minutes of the train stopping at the station, these people can even sold out these things they carried. The train at that time was nicknamed as “freight train” for it carried far more commodity than passengers.

After 2000, the train K3/ K4 became quite popular among tourists. More and more western tourists choose to take the international train to appreciate the beautiful scenery along the road. In busy seasons, the tickets can be sold out in a quite short period of time once released.
